A Video Showing the Effects of Torture on a Saudi Citizen by the Bahraini Security Authorities

A Video Showing the Effects of Torture on a Saudi Citizen by the Bahraini Security Authorities 12 February 2010 The Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights expresses its deep concern regarding the video it received of a Saudi citizen being tortured by the security apparatuses; the Saudi citizen had been accused in a criminal lawsuit in Bahrain and he was in provisional detention in the "Dry Dock" prison. Information received by the BYSHR indicates that the Saudi citizen was arrested in Bahrain on criminal charges, and he was kept in the "Dry Dock" prison for 45 days, where he faced severe torture by the security forces and due to that he was transferred to the hospital for treatment from injuries [1].

The information confirmed that the security forces were made up of various Asian and Arab nationalities, and the Saudi citizen indicated those nationalities in the video. The Saudi citizen explained that they practiced brutal torture against him.

Information received by the BYSHR pointed that the security forces in the “Dry Dock” prison asked the Saudi citizen to contact his family in Saudi Arabia to inform them that individuals from the “Shiite” sect in prison attacked and beat him in prison, but the Saudi citizen refused to inform this to his family.

The video recording shows that the Saudi citizen confirmed filing a lawsuit against the security authorities due to the torture it practiced against him.

This incident comes just days after statements of the Minister of Interior against the report issued by the Human Rights Watch [2] on torture in Bahrain, where the Ministry of Interior indicate that the security forces protect rights of humans and does not practice torture against prisoners.

The report issued by the Human Rights Watch [3] verified that the Ministry of Interior practices systematic torture against the prisoners in security issues, and it discusses cases in the period 2007 to 2009. The report included testimonies from torture victims who confirmed that torture was used against them in order to extract forced confessions.

The Bahraini authorities and government institutions launched a campaign against Bahraini human rights and political bodies that contributed in providing some information for the report on torture in Bahrain.

The Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights stresses on the recommendations issued by the Human Rights Watch in their report on torture, and emphasizes that the security forces uses torture against the defendants in security and criminal cases.

The BYSHR demands the following:

1. Initiate an independent and unbiased investigation in the torture cases against the defendants in criminal and security cases.

2. Present the ones responsible for torture to a just and public trial.

3. Execute the recommendations of the Human Rights Watch on torture in Bahrain.
